Learning Disabilities Nurse - Dungavel IRC, Strathaven
Salary: £39,912 – 48,655 per annumÂ

About the Role:
We are looking for a dedicated, compassionate, and highly skilled Learning Disabilities Nurse Band 6 to join our healthcare team at Dungavel Immigration Removal Centre. This is an exciting opportunity to provide high-quality care to individuals with learning disabilities in a secure, multidisciplinary environment. You will work alongside a team of professionals to provide comprehensive care, ensuring the well-being and safety of detainees, while supporting their physical, emotional, and psychological needs.
As a Learning Disabilities Nurse at Dungavel, you will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care of individuals with learning disabilities, ensuring that they receive the best possible care in a secure setting. You will also collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals, including mental health nurses, doctors, and support staff, to deliver person-centered care and improve the quality of life for detainees with learning disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for individuals with learning disabilities, ensuring that care is tailored to individual needs and meets the required standards.
- Develop and maintain positive, respectful relationships with detainees to ensure they feel supported and understood.
- Work within a multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic care, addressing physical, emotional, and mental health needs.
- Ensure effective communication with colleagues and external professionals to deliver integrated care.
- Support detainees in managing their learning disabilities, including the use of individualized care plans, behavioural support, and educational interventions.
- Administer medication as prescribed and ensure accurate records are maintained.
- Monitor and evaluate the care environment, ensuring that it is safe and conducive to the well-being of detainees.
- Maintain a clear understanding of relevant legislation and best practices, including safeguarding and mental health laws, and ensure compliance with these standards.
- Provide advice and training to other staff members on how to support individuals with learning disabilities.
- Adhere to policies and procedures to maintain a secure, safe environment for both detainees and staff.

Essential Experience and Qualifications:
- Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse (RNLD) with valid NMC registration.
- Proven experience working with individuals with learning disabilities in a healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of mental health conditions, including how they may interact with learning disabilities.
- Experience in person-centered care, risk assessments, and care planning.
- Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team and communicate across all levels.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with individuals with varying degrees of vulnerability.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of detainees with learning disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications and Skills:
- Training or experience in de-escalation and crisis management techniques.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, such as the Care Act, the Mental Health Act, and safeguarding laws.
- Understanding of the complexities of working in a secure environment and the ability to remain calm and composed in challenging situations.
- Experience in a secure or challenging environment, such as prisons, secure hospitals, or immigration removal centres.
- Experience in supporting individuals with autism, learning disabilities, and challenging behaviour.
- Ability to contribute to quality improvement initiatives and audits.
